"When the pandemic started spreading across the U.S., it’s little coincidence that pickleball did too. With a low cost of entry, easy rules to follow and a format ideal for socially distanced competition, it quickly caught fire. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association has named it the nation’s fastest-growing sport two years running, with a total participant count of some 4.8 million. That’s still a far cry from the 20 million-plus American tennis players, but pickleball participation is up 39% over the past two years and still growing. Celebrity acolytes include George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio. Stephen Colbert is behind an upcoming celebrity pickleball special for CBS and Paramount+."
Sports Business Journal: Are You Ready For Some Pickleball? "Pickleball isn’t a sport at a crossroads as much as it’s a five-lane highway with everyone trying to merge while careening against the guardrails at top speed. There are three professional leagues battling for players, customers, sponsors and superiority. Communities are racing to build courts to satisfy an ever-growing appetite, and investors are finding new ways to monetize the sport. Meanwhile, the tennis community is trying to save its courts and safeguard its future."
